Web Designer

Reporting to the project manager, the web designer designs various websites and web pages for existing and potential clients. A contribution to the overall web communications strategy of the company's internal website and special projects will also be required.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Create design prototypes, including graphic design, site navigation, and layout of content for websites.
  2. Ensure the layout of the content is accessible and logical; recommend improvements if necessary.
  3. Create visual concepts that match the content and the image desired by the clients; ensure that sites are easy to navigate.
  4. Contribute to the overall development of the web communications group and of the university website.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree in communications, graphic design or other disciplines related to the primary responsibilities.
  2. Two to four years of experience in web design.
  3. Advanced knowledge and formal training of digital imaging and illustration with Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXPress and/or Illustrator.
  4. Knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, PHP and dynamic HTML; experience with Macromedia Flash is an asset.
  5. Knowledge and demonstrated experience with cross-browser and cross-platform issues (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
  6. Very good spoken and written English (level 5) in order to communicate with clients and internal team.
  7. Attention to detail, customer-service orientation, and creativity in problem-solving.
  8. Ability to work in a team and to communicate in a clear way providing training to staff and faculty.
  9. Formal training in desktop publishing applications, and photography definite assets.
  10. Superior knowledge of current web-design trends and techniques, a strong online portfolio displaying user-centred design, and experience with web database solutions are definite assets.
